This application is $2 USD from the Cydia Store

iClassic, an iPod Classic emulator for the iPhone and iPod Touch, has been released in the Cydia Store. The package is basically an iPod Classic look-a-like program that opens from your springboard, and lets you listen you listen to all the music in your library. Of course, some of the options on a real iPod Classic are missing for obvious reasons, but most things are there. This is the first release of the program, and updates should follow to allow more functionality. At the moment, only music can be played with the program, but photo viewing and video watching capabilities could be added in the weeks/months to come.

The main screen of iClassic:

iclassic_main

As you can see, it almost exactly replicates an iPod Classic. You may notice that the scroll wheel that shows is different to that of an iPod Classic. This is due to legal reasons with Apple. If you would like to get the original click wheel to show, I will have some instructions at the end of this post.

Screen showing the song now playing:

iclassic_music_main

This part is fully functional. The scroll wheel will change the volume and the s0ng can be skipped. All of the buttons on the click wheel will work when pressed.

The only issue that I can find with this is that scrolling fast causes it to jump a bit. Hopefully this will be fixed in an update. Solid app overall though.

NEXT PART: If you want the default iPod Classic click wheel then follow these steps.

Make sure you already have Winterboard installed.

1. Open Cydia and search for iPod Classic Theme and install that package.

2. Activate it in Winterboard and your device will respring.

The next time that iClassic is opened, the new click wheel will be displayed instead.

Shazam is an extremely useful application available from the app store for free. This app will tell you what song is playing just by listening to a bit of it. Shazam is ad supported so it is free for now. When the tag now button is tapped, a screen like the one at the bottom will appear. Once the circle has gone around fully, the phone will vibrate to tell you it is starting to analyze the song to find out what it is. This app does use data when uploading smaples to identify so it will not work if there is no wifi or cell network connection. If there is no active internet connection available, shazam will store the tag for later use so that you can send it when there is an Internet connection available.

The main screen of shazam looks like this:

All of the songs that have been tagged (identified) are shown in a list view. Simply tap on one to view more information like album name, band biography/discography and where the tag took place (no, it doesn’t send your location to anyone).

I give this application a 5/5 rating because of all the times I have had to use it and it has sucessfully identified the song. Only a couple of the times has it failed to do so. I recommend you download this application right now because you never know when it will be useful. This application works for all iPhones and the iPod touch 2G and 3G with the headphone microphones only.

Rockband for iPhone and iPod touch has been released. If you have absolutely no idea what rockband is, here is a brief explanation:

Rockband is essentially, Guitar Hero or Tap Tap Revenge. Notes scroll down the screen and the user must tap on the screen at the correct time. The notes come down the screen in time with the music. Guitar Hero and Tap Tap Revenge will only allow you to play one instrument for a song, and this is where Rockband differs. Rockband will allow you to choose from multiple instruments to play the song with. Drums, Bass, Guitar or Vocals. Each of these instruments has the same style, but the beats and timing will obviously be different depending on what instrument is selected.

The other cool thing in this application is that full multiplayer is provided built in to this application. You can play against other iPod touch or iPhone users over bluetooth. The multiplayer function will also allow you to play with up to 3 other players, with different instruments.

This app is available in the App Store right now for $10. Go and buy it now, because I highly recommend this application.

Tweetie 2 is a Twitter client for iPhone and iPod touch, and has just been released. Twitter 2 is a completely new upgrade to the original Tweetie application, but unfortunately, Tweetie 2 will not come as a free upgrade to original Tweetie owners. The new application will be sold on the app store for $2.99 USD (or about $4 NZD). This application is still the best native twitter application on the App Store so I recommend you go and but it right now.

You might remember back on the 2.x firmwares, there was a solution for viewing your iPhone’s or iPod touch’s filesystem without using a computer. It was named MobileFinder. The author of that application never got around to porting the application to 3.x, but don’t worry because a brand new and much, much better package is now available in the Cydia Store. The package is called iFile and it also has many readers, so you can view things like pictures, videos, audio and text files from within the application. I find myself constantly using this application to move videos downloaded from the web into the dTunes folder so I can view them. I recommend downloading this application, but it is a paid application. Even though it is a paid application, you can download a trial that will never run out, but a few features are unavailable in the trial version. Of course there are other ways to get the application without paying for it (I’m sure you can figure that out).

MxTube (if you don’t already know) is a native application available in Cydia that will allow you to download YouTube videos, and view them later. This application is compatible with the 3.0 firmware, and can be downloaded from one of the major repositories.

This is the main screen of MxTube:
mxtube_main_screen

MxTube provides a search feature, and when a video is selected it will give you the option to download the video or stream. Either of which can be done in EDGE or WiFi quality. Once a video is selected for download, it will appear in the downloads tab. The video can then be viewed in the videos tab.

mxtube_downloads_tab

I recommend downloading this application from Cydia, as it demonstrates exactly how the original YouTube application should have been from the start. Obviously, this application is only for jailbroken iPhone users at the moment.

Chilltwit is a native Twitter application for iPhone, and right now it is on special. It is now FREE! Grab a copy of this Twitter application while it is free, and maybe it might even get to the top of the social network category in the App Store. This Twitter client is quite different to all the others out there in the App Store, because this application is very customizable. Many things can be changed in the application the suit your preferences. This application will only be free for a limited time, so download it before it becomes a paid app again!

Note: At the time of writing this post, the application was still free. ITS NOT MY FAULT IF YOU’RE TOO LATE!
