Up until this week, AT&T has restricted use of VOIP iPhone apps over its 3G network. AT&T has stated that it will now support these applications, but the applications will need to be updated to allow this. Jailbroken users always had an advantage here, because a package from the Cydia Store call 3G Unrestrictor could remove the limits that the iPhone apps imposed, and therefore the apps could be used over 3G. A while back, the Google Voice application was rejected from the App Store by Apple, and rumours started that AT&T had played a part in the rejection. The FCC got involved, and requested information on Apple’s app store submission process. Apple claimed that it had acted entirely on its own part, and AT&T did nothing. The developer of the Google Voice application then decided to make the application available to Cydia users.
SlingPlayer is still not usable over the 3G network, because there is a seperate AT&T policy to stop this. Apple will also have to fix the iPhone SDK (software development kit) to allow developers to add 3G network capability to their applications.
